My Weird Workouts plus a Prana and Organic Valley #Weirdworkout Giveaway

Weird Workouts. We all have our weird workouts. When you are a mom, multitasking becomes the key to life. I still love my fitness classes where I get to put Logan in daycare for an hour and focus only on working out. Reality is that doesn’t happen everyday.  Some days I dedicate his nap time to a workout. This means dinner probably isn’t getting cooked and the house starts looking more and more like a bomb went off. The solution is my weird workout where I workout and play with Logan. #Fitmom multitasking at its finest. I spend more time on the floor these days playing with my little man than I do in a chair or even standing. My multitasking floor workouts with Logan are mostly Pilates based since I can do almost all the exercises on the ground. Sometimes the little man decides crawling on me is more fun. My solution to this is pick him up and use him as a weight. Squatting seems to always be the best. Most of the time he laughs and laughs as I squat down and up. What do your weird workouts look like?

Outdoor Adventures with Littles: Running

If you have read this blog since the beginning you are aware that cardio isn’t always my favorite activity. I get bored easily and prefer sports or a fitness class that incorporates my cardio.

Now that I’m a mom, running has become the easiest way for me to incorporate cardio. I can easily strap Logan into the stroller, put in my headphones with a good play list and we are off. Most of the time we run on a track in our neighborhood or around the path at Green Lake. Living in Seattle with so many great running trails in the city, I have been motivated to start trail running. I have taken these trail running shoes on a few solo runs at Carkeek Park and a few trail walks with Logan. I haven’t figured out how to master the art of trail running with a baby or if I need to keep to only trail walking. For now I plan to stick to trail walking with my little man and paved running!

So now my question for all the mamas out there is what is the best jogging and running strollers? I have been using my stroller for running even though it isn’t made for that. It has worked on tracks and paved paths but now is the time I need to invest in that jogging stroller for those rougher running trails! Please comment or email me your favorites!!

If I got to choose my ideal weekend, it would involve the mountains, water, hiking, family, and being active. This weekend didn’t consist of all of those but we did manage to squeeze in some of my favorite weekend activities.  The Southern country girl in me seems to be longing for mountains and being off the grid more and more as I get older.  This weekend we stayed in the city. We had friends in town from North Carolina so we decided Logan was coming with us out to dinner Friday night. Our dinner reservations at Ray’s Cafe were after Logan’s normal bedtime so I was counting on Puffs to be our saving grace. I feel like I need to thank the person who invented Puffs with all my heart. The Puffs did their job with distracting Logan. Overall he was well behaved except for his constant need to try and stand in the high chair and climb on the table.

Saturday morning I attended the #stylelabSEA blogger workshop hosted by Gossip & Glamour and blogger babes Juliana of Blush & Camo, McKenna of Modern Mosaic, and Allison of West Coast Aesthetic.  The Seattle blogging community is amazing and everyone is so supportive of each other. It was so great to spend the morning surrounding by so many of my favorite Seattle babes.

The temperatures made it into the 90s Saturday afternoon so we ventured out to Golden Gardens. That Pacific Ocean sure isn’t as warm as the Atlantic! Tonight we plan to family walk down to the water and I will be bundled up in a sweatshirt and pants. I guess that’s a Pacific Northwest summer. I got to hang with my boys, see mountains in the distance and play in the water this weekend. Hopefully, we get to squeeze in a few weekend mountain day trips in the next few weeks. I’ll make up for lack of being active this week. Planning to start the week off right with a barre class to get my muscles shaking!

Workout Highs

The workout high is real! It may be hard to motivate yourself to workout or to get up to make it happen. However, no doubt it will always be worth it.

IMG_9066

I’m realizing the teaching high is real too. One of my students left my Pilates class this morning smiling as she walked out saying “I did something today I have never been able to do before.” That seriously made my day. I grabbed Logan from the gym daycare and treated myself to some free gym coffee. Coffee in Seattle is good everywhere–even at the gym. Her comment kept running through my head. On the drive home, I realized I am exactly where I need to be. I had a few days this week where I questioned my career path again. I couldn’t have needed the little positive reminder more today.

IMG_9080

I still consider myself a newbie to the fitness teaching world. I received my Pilates certification at the end of last year and decided to expand my knowledge with my Personal Training License through NASM this year. There is so much to learn about how the body moves. I am hoping to keep furthering the classes I teach and have been fortunate to sub some barre classes last month. If you are someone who is thinking about taking the plunge into fitness, sign up for training in something you love and get certified. Start the process and make it happen. Even if you don’t teach once you complete training, it will deepen your knowledge of that workout. I promise you will take your workouts to a whole new level.

IMG_9176

I was invited to teach a Pilates class through the WholeU a few weeks ago. The WholeU is program at the University of Washington that helps faculty and staff stay healthy, get active and eat well. I think this is something more employers should really work to provide for their employees. The class I taught included students at all Pilates levels. The energy is the room was electric. Kudos to the WholeU for promoting a healthier campus!

IMG_9034

I also want to give a shout out to my husband for the kickoff matches of the tennis league he founded this year. Check out the website here to learn more. The Seattle Pro League will feature top men’s tennis players in the Seattle area. The first match is this Sunday at 4:00 PM at Central Park Tennis Club. If you live in Seattle and love to watch high level tennis, come on out! Logan and I will be cheering on Ryan’s team!!

Now off take a Pilates reformer class. Thank goodness for gym daycare!

You can find my new favorite yoga mat here. My sandals are also from Sanuk and feel amazing. Linked some of their amazing sandals below.

Wearing cacti in hopes we get a few warmer days before summer is officially over. My second summer in Seattle has been a cold one. We had a few ninety degree days in April that had me excited for warmer weather on the horizon. Summer never happened. Much of this summer I have been in pants or wearing a sweater when the sun goes down.

Exciting news is that we are headed back to North Carolina at the end of the month. I will get my fair share of hot weather and humidity. I’m sure I will be ready to get back to this cool weather.

Weekends at Home

DSC_8235 (1)

We spent more time at home this weekend than I thought we would. Friday evening we made it out with Logan to meet some of our friends from Arizona visiting. Saturday we ventured to Seattle Tennis Club to watch some of the Washington State Open. Other than that, we stayed around the house. It’s just what we needed.

DSC_8180

Logan took his first steps right before our Whistler trip. He has made it up to six steps in a row but most of the time it’s still just one or two before he falls. He has really become a speed demon crawling and when he can walk assisted with furniture or the coffee table.

Between cleaning and yard work, we made sure to get outside and stay active. I went for a stroller run around the track Sunday morning and we ended the weekend with our usual walk down to the water. I have been in a little rut with my workouts but excited to get back into more of a workout routine this week. My goal is to knock out a stroller run three days a week, first thing in the morning. So far, I’m 0 for 1 this week. Will I ever become a morning person?!! I’m really trying hard!

Now about my outfit… My top and sports bra are both from Lululemon. My leggings and shoes are both Brooks Running. Let’s say I have been living in these black leggings since I received them. They fit like a glove and are super lightweight. They are great for running on cool Seattle summer mornings. I also wear them to teach and practice Pilates. If you are in the market for black leggings, I can’t say enough great things about these. My shoes are my first pair of trail running shoes. I had every intention of a quick trail run this weekend but it just didn’t happen. Instead, I wore them to the park by our house with the little man.

Whistler Nights

Our time in Whistler was short but we did try and take advantage of being baby free for two nights. The drive Friday took a few hours longer than anticipated. Due to our late arrival we opted to eat at the FireRock restaurant in our hotel for our first night. It was just the ambiance we needed after the drive. The staff was amazing and gave us great recommendations for restaurants, hikes and all things Whistler.

DSC_7955

Saturday night, we made reservations at 21 Steps. In case you were wondering, there were 21 steps leading up to the restaurant because I counted them walking in. I highly recommend this restaurant for a date night or with kids. Overall, Whistler is so kid friendly.

Rest, Recovery & Matcha

Let’s start with saying I am still recovering from our weekend anniversary trip to Whistler. It was our first trip away from Logan since he was born. It was so strange waking up and not attending to someone else first thing in the morning. Our weekend was packed with lots of hiking, good food and a little too much sitting in traffic each way. Our lesson learned here was not to traffic across the border at high peak times ever again!

DSC_7749

We went on an incredible Whistler mountain hike Saturday – I’m talking over nine miles of intense hiking. Can’t wait to share some of the incredible photos and video! For now, I am stretching, doing Pilates and drinking lots of Matcha!

DSC_8133

I know I am a little late to the Matcha tea consumption. Tea used to be the only beverage I consumed before pregnancy. When I got pregnant with Logan, I stopped drinking tea all together. There are so many mixed views on tea consumption during pregnancy but I decided to drink none. Once Logan arrived, the coffee drinking started. I blame it on the fact I moved to Seattle that I suddenly started drinking black coffee.

DSC_8156

I tried some strawberry match from David’s Tea on our trip and instantly became hooked. So cheers to Matcha drinking to get me through this week!

Finally Smoothie Weather

Summer has finally arrived in Seattle. I spent most of June trying to dig out some sweaters and long sleeves so I could stay warm. I’m still on the fence if I like the cooler summers here. The weather is nice enough to be outside and not feel like you are melting. Warmer days means more smoothies.

In case you missed my Instagram posts, I’m sharing what I posted for Bob Red Mill’s summer challenge. My favorite way to get sweaty in the summer sunshine — hiking! We might not hike quite as much as we used but we still get out and hike with Logan.

FD hike1 (1)

My favorite squat variation is with a stroller! I am sure these neighborhood views will never get old!

IMG_6222

The fuel that gets me out of bed feeling summer strong is a smoothie bowl. My smoothie bowl base was 1 cup of frozen berries, 1/2 banana, 1/3 cup Bob’s Red Mill vanilla protein powder and 1 cup of almond milk. Toppings were chia seeds, banana, blackberries and almonds.

DSC_5508

Adapting workouts for the summer heat is easy here in Seattle because the heat never gets unbearable. Sometimes, I will wait till the sun starts going down for my outside workout if it gets warm that day.

IMG_6249

My favorite way for working my arms. Tricep dips!

I wanted to congratulate Realia on winning the Bob’s Red Mill protein powder giveaway!

I have been making a lot of my oatmeal no bake cookies this summer. They are so great for satisfying that sweet tooth while cheating clean. See this blog post for the recipe using Bob’s Red Mill chocolate protein.

Golden Gardens Sunset

“Because when you stop and look around, this life is pretty amazing” -Dr. Seuss

DSC_7251

It’s easy to get caught up in the everyday routine of life and sometimes forget to take a moment to look around at all the beauty surrounding us. We took some time last night to enjoy the Seattle sunset while my Mom stayed with Logan. We stopped by Sunset Hill Park first. It’s a small park overlooking the Pudget Sound. The view was beautiful.

Next, we drove down the hill to Golden Gardens to watch the sunset. I wanted to be by the beach to watch the sun go down. The beach was still packed with swimmers, kayakers, sand volleyball players and families grilling out.
